How do I increase SIP without feeling it?
The painless SIP increase is the one you route on appraisal day, before Zomato learns the new number.

Lifestyle has better reflexes than Excel
The painless SIP increase is the one you route on appraisal day, before Zomato learns the new number.
A 10% step-up on a ₹10,000 SIP is ₹1,000. On a Raipur take-home that just rose ₹8,000, it is the cheapest adult tax you will ever pay yourself.
Hold that tension. The pretty version comes later, if it survives.
Someone in Raipur will still tell you a story that skips the EMI night. Ignore that person.
You can hate the answer and still need it on paper.
Waiting three months “to see if the raise is real” is how the raise becomes a louder weekend.
Discomfort here is a signal. A 15% slider is not.
Nobody hands out a medal for pretending your Excel is braver than your salary.
Lifestyle still gets a majority. Future gets a slice.
Steal from the raise, not from rent
On the day the first hiked salary credits, change SIP by 30–40% of the in-hand raise, not 100%. You still have a life.
Turn on 10% annual step-up if the fund house allows. Pick April or your increment month.
Open a calculator and type the ugly version first—₹8,000 extra in-hand, ₹0 extra SIP, plus a new ₹2,499 subscription stack that appeared “because I earn more now”.
Type the version that would still stand after a bad bonus year.
If increment is a bonus, not a monthly raise, do a one-time buy plus a smaller monthly bump. Bonuses are slippery.
AMC step-up (annual %) beats remembering. Humans forget in June. Mandates do not.
If you cannot explain the result to a slightly impatient parent, you do not understand it yet.
Step-up theatre
Jumping ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 because a reel said “be aggressive.” Bounce in month two is the fee for theatre.
Step-up in a small-cap only. The chilli gets the raise, the core stays malnourished.
Raising SIP and EMI the same month as a new phone EMI. That is how FOIR and SIPs meet in a dark hallway.
If a caption fits in eight words, it skipped the messy month.
Your cousin’s 2017 small-cap luck is not a policy.
A plan that never gets a yearly refresh is a framed poster.
In Raipur the skipped review later becomes a complaint about luck. It was maintenance.
15-year 12% sketch. Raises must actually happen.
Make the bump mechanical
Monthly raise exists: auto 10% SIP step-up plus a one-time bump this month.
Raise is tiny or eaten by rent: skip the bump, keep the SIP alive.
Irregular income: bump after a quiet quarter, not after one fat invoice.
Clear the 16% fire, keep oats, then argue about this. That sequence is not optional.
Investing while revolving a 36% card is theatre.
If cash is tight this quarter, shrink the plan. Do not vanish from it.
A smaller SIP or a shorter loan goal beats a heroic screenshot you cancel in six weeks.
₹10,000 becoming ₹11,000 in April
₹10,000 SIP, 10% yearly step-up, 12% for 15 years can sketch far closer to a flat ₹16,000–₹18,000 path than pride admits.
Taking ₹3,000 of an ₹8,000 raise into SIP leaves ₹5,000 for life. That split still compounds. All-₹8,000 into lifestyle compounds too—in the other direction.
Delaying the ₹3,000 bump by 1 year on a 15-year clock is a lakh-class leak in a 12% sketch. “I will start next April” is a TER.
If someone sells the same figure as a guarantee, walk.
If the plan only works at 18% returns or a 6% home loan forever, it is not a plan.
The bear version is the one you should be able to explain at dinner.
Keep a 10% haircut for tax, fees, or the extra month the builder delays.
If the bump is still “someday,” it will stay someday.
Feel it once, on a form, not for 12 weekends
Move the extra on salary day. Feel clever for ten minutes. Then forget.
A step-up you actually debit beats a prettier number in a notes app.
Boring consistency beats a dramatic restart every January.
Calendar reminder beats a quote about discipline.
When someone in Raipur asks, share the widget with your numbers stripped. Let them type theirs.
And please date your spreadsheet. Future you will not remember which fantasy version this was.
