SIP vs RD — which one for a 5-year goal?

Five years is long for an RD rate and short for equity drama. Pick with the date printed on the goal, not the flyer.

SIP vs RD — which one for a 5-year goal?

Five years is an awkward tenant

RD is a handshake with the bank. SIP is a handshake with markets. Five years is an awkward length for both, which is why people pick by slogan.

An RD at ~6.5–7% is a known cheque. An equity SIP at a 10–12% sketch is a maybe with a better average and a nastier path.

Start there. Marketing copy can wait its turn.

Someone in Kochi will still tell you a story that skips the EMI night. Ignore that person.

Numbers first. Feelings after the numbers get a chair.

If the money pays a wedding or a visa in month 61, a 25% NAV scrape in month 58 is not “volatility.” It is a cancelled hall.

If those two numbers already make you uncomfortable, believe them.

A dated goal in a small-cap fund is how holidays become credit-card stories.

₹8,000 × 60 months — where it might land

RD is the known cheque. SIP is the range.

Put the two maturity cheques on a table

Write the exact month you need the money. If it cannot slip by 2 years, treat equity as optional garnish, not the plate.

Run RD at your bank’s current rate and SIP at 10%, not 15%. Inflated SIP rates are how RDs lose a fake fight.

Open a calculator and type the ugly version first—₹8,000 × 60 = ₹4.8 lakh in, RD near ₹5.6 lakh, equity SIP sketch near ₹6.6 lakh—or ₹4.2 lakh after a last-year crash.

Round, optimistic inputs are how people sleep until the third bounce.

If you already skip RDs, you will skip SIPs. The winner is the mandate you will not cancel after a Kochi monsoon bill.

Hybrid or short-duration debt SIP sits between them. It is less viral than Nifty, more honest than “RD is for cowards.”

If you cannot explain the result to a slightly impatient parent, you do not understand it yet.

How this debate gets cheated

Comparing RD interest to last year’s small-cap without mentioning that you need the cash in 2029, not 2039.

Breaking the RD every 11 months and restarting. That is not compounding. That is admin.

Parking a 5-year house token in a sectoral SIP because a cousin made money in 2020.

If a caption fits in eight words, it skipped the messy month.

Your cousin’s 2017 small-cap luck is not a policy.

Re-run the numbers when salary, rate, or the goal date moves. That is the whole maintenance.

In Kochi the skipped review later becomes a complaint about luck. It was maintenance.

Same ₹8,000, 5-year sketch

Last-year crash path is why dates matter.

A rule that respects the calendar

Date is fixed (wedding, admission): RD or a debt fund SIP. Sleep is a return.

Date can slide and you have other cash: equity SIP, with a shift to debt in the last 12–18 months.

Unsure: ₹5,000 RD + ₹3,000 SIP. Splitting is allowed. Debating on Instagram is not a third product.

If a card is revolving, this page is homework, not a green flag to invest more.

Investing while revolving a 36% card is theatre.

Cut the size before you cut the habit. Habits are expensive to rebuild.

A smaller SIP or a shorter loan goal beats a heroic screenshot you cancel in six weeks.

₹8,000 a month, 60 instalments

₹8,000 monthly for 5 years: money in ₹4.8 lakh. RD ~6.5% sketches near ₹5.6–₹5.7 lakh. SIP at 12% sketches near ₹6.6 lakh.

If SIP finishes at ₹5.1 lakh after a ugly last year, the RD “lost” on WhatsApp and won in the hall booking.

A 50:50 split lands near ₹6.1 lakh in a decent SIP year and still has a known RD half if markets sulk.

If someone sells the same figure as a guarantee, walk.

If the plan only works at 18% returns or a 6% home loan forever, it is not a plan.

The bear version is the one you should be able to explain at dinner.

Keep a 10% haircut for tax, fees, or the extra month the builder delays.

Does this 5-year goal belong in equity SIP

Low date-flex? Keep most of it in RD or debt.

Pick a product you will not abandon in year 3

Five-year money deserves a date, a product, and a shift plan. Not a personality quiz.

If you cannot name the month you need it, you do not have a 5-year goal. You have a vibe.

Boring consistency beats a dramatic restart every January.

Calendar reminder beats a quote about discipline.

If a friend in Kochi asks the same thing next month, send them the calculator link, not a lecture.

And please date your spreadsheet. Future you will not remember which fantasy version this was.
